TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — More than 60 new troopers have joined the ranks of the Florida Highway Patrol.

The troopers graduated from the highway patrol's Training Academy on Wednesday. The graduates went through 28 weeks of intense physical and classroom training and participated in community service activities.

They'll join the nearly 1,800 troopers who patrol the state's highways.

Trooper Phillip Boutros received the Executive Director's Award for having the highest grade point average. The Director's Award was presented to Trooper James Allen Jr. for demonstrating extraordinary courtesy and dedication during training.

When they report to their duty stations, the new graduates will work with a field training officer for up to 12 weeks before being released to solo duty.
