MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A South Florida family is asking for the community's help to find their loved one's killer.

It's been more than a month since 25-year-old Jamal Martin was killed in Liberty City, and police have not made an arrest.

"I need the world to know that Jamal was a great kid, he was an excellent father," said his mother, Shena Thomas.

Martin was gunned down on the night of April 17th outside a Liberty City apartment building on Northwest 14th Place and 71st Avenue.

"Our lives haven't been the same since my son died. I haven't been sleeping. Oh God, I just want justice," said Thomas.

Martin had returned from a night at a recording studio when he asked a group of people to leave the area outside his front door. An argument broke out and shots were fired. Martin was killed and the gunman got away.

While family members await an arrest in the case, they've also hired an attorney who's filed a lawsuit against the owners of the apartment building for failing to provide security.

"As you can see there is no access control, the lights don't work, no surveillance camera, no armed or unarmed guard. They have no protection for the visitors or tenants," said Pedrro Echarte, the family's attorney.

The lawsuit claims the building was the scene of another fatal shooting in January of 2014.

As the suit proceeds through the court system, and police investigate the shooting, Martin's 8-year-old son says he simply misses his dad.

"When I wanted to go somewhere he was always there for me. He would go when I was by myself," said Jamal Martin Jr.

Police are hoping someone knows something about the murder of Jamal Martin.

Anyone with information should call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
