Well-Known High School Track Coach Collapses, Dies At Meet

FORT MYERS (CBSmiami/AP) — While at the state track and field championships, a popular South Florida high school coach and athletic director collapsed and died.

Fort Myers News Press reports that Jeff Sommer, 58, died Saturday. The Estero High School coach had coached at schools in Lee County for 38 years.

Sommer won four state boys' cross country titles in 1992, 1997, 1998 and 2010. His girls' teams won four straight state titles from 2010-2013.

He was named Florida Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2012-2013. His cross country teams have been ranked nationally five times.

He ran the Boston Marathon in 1982 and 1985.

He suffered a heart attack in 1999, but returned to coaching shortly after.
