Ruiz's sister Nilsa Ruiz didn't want to speak to CBS4 News on Saturday. She even went so far as to call the police.

However, on Friday she described her sister as a loving mother despite the conditions in which her children were allegedly living.

"Those kids are her life," said Nilsa Ruiz.

Nilsa Ruiz said her sister and her boyfriend were overwhelmed trying to work and care for their three daughters who range in age from five to eight.

"They took turns going to work taking care of the kids back and forth," Nilsa Ruiz explained. "The girls are in honor roll all three of them and she's a great mom but she has too much on her."

Ruiz said she believes her sister may suffer from mental illness or a hoarding issue. She hopes her sister will be able to get some help.

The couple was released from jail Friday night and family members hope the arrest will lead these parents to get some assistance getting their home and lives back in order.

As for the children, they are in the care of their grandparents. The parents are allowed supervised visitation.
