Accused Child Killer's Attorney Still Blames Boy's Mother For Death

SUNRISE (CBSMiami) – The attorney for accused child killer Corey Gordon has said for months that his client did not kill 3-year-old Khyese Coach, the son of his then-girlfriend Chantal Haye. Instead, attorney Gawane Grant has laid the blame for the boy's death on Haye.

And at a hearing on Thursday to try and get Gordon released from jail on bond, Grant continued with that line of defense.

Chantal Haye, though, tearfully made it clear that she had nothing to do with her son's torturous death. She wailed and wept through her entire testimony, reliving the agonizing moments when she discovered her son was dead.

At one point, Haye told the prosecutor, "I don't want to remember" the events.

After composing herself, Haye said on Monday February 9th she started a new job in Boca Raton. Her boyfriend Corey Gordon promised to watch Kyhese for her. She said she spoke to Gordon during the day and he seemed upset with Kyhese after the boy soiled a piece of furniture. Hours later, when Gordon picked up Haye at work with her son in the car she knew something was wrong.

"As I'm walking closer to him I seen tears in his eyes," Haye testified. "I said what's wrong and I see Kyhese in the car and he look like this (tilts head to side) it looks like he sleeping."

Haye said she saw bruises all over her son's lifeless body.

"I just started questioning every single bruise," she said. "I said what happened to his mouth. He talked about him falling down some steps. I said Corey he didn't fall down no steps."

She said there were bruises all over his stomach and an assistant medical examiner said Coach died from abdominal trauma. Gordon is charged with murdering the boy.

Gordon's attorney wanted to know if Haye ever beat her son. She admitted spanking him but never abusing him.

In the days after Coach's death, CBS4 reported that child welfare workers investigated two allegations of abuse of Coach involving Gordon and Haye but never found any signs of abuse or neglect on the child.

The bond hearing will continue next Tuesday. Gordon is being held without bond in the Broward County Jail charged with murder.
