Report: Dolphins Will Not Match Bills' Offer For Charles Clay
The Miami Dolphins are parting ways with tight end Charles Clay, choosing not to match the Bills' five-year, $38 million offer (for a reported $20 million guaranteed), according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero.
Miami had the cap room to retain Clay if they wanted but the Bills reportedly structured the contract in a manner making it especially unappealing for the Dolphins to do so after tying themselves to enormous guaranteed money with the signing Ndamukong Suh last week.
Clay, a sixth-round pick out of Tulsa in 2011, totalled 161 catches, 1,809 yards, and 14 touchdowns in four seasons with Miami. He was Pro Football Focus' 14th best tight end last season.
The Dolphins aren't bare at the position after signing tight end Jordan Cameron, though he has battled concussion issues in the past. The team also returns 24-year-old Dion Sims who piled up 284 yards last season and can elect to draft a tight end on what would be a highly affordable contract.
