The Evolution Of Colorful Kitchens

Kitchen appliances have come a long way in just a few decades. With the kitchen becoming one of the most important spaces in the home, design and color have now become a major factor in choosing appliances.

As time progressed new styles and colors were manufactured based not only on consumer preferences, but industry innovations. Homeowners want a seamless look in the design of their kitchen, even reaching out to a single "open concept" room that joins with the living/entertainment space.  That visibility means that the kitchen is now the showcase of the home with state of the art appliances both large and small.

When the first kitchen appliances were introduced, only white enamel was offered.   Throughout the 1950s, colors such as Turquoise Green, Petal Pink, and Sunny Yellow popped up into mass production. Colored appliances continued to remain a critical factor for the fashion-conscious buyer well into the late 1960s.

Pastel colors transitioned to earth tones, and the selection darkened to Harvest Gold, Avocado Green and Onyx Black over the next few years.

During the mid-1980s, Soft Silver appliances were then added to the color collection.  This alternative satisfied the homeowner's demand for a clean, crisp kitchen appearance.  Since then, a staple in the kitchen has become Stainless Steel and even more recently, Slate colored appliances were launched.  With Slate now in the picture, consumers now have a warm grey, low-gloss matte textured metallic finish as an alternative to stainless steel.  These type of finishes are easy to pair with all types of countertops in a whole range of colors and styles.

In addition to the improvement of color choices, design and function has also changed immensely over the years. For example, in the 1940's, top mount refrigerators that needed to be defrosted frequently were the only choice buyers had.

The only other appliance in the kitchen was a gas or electric range with a single or double oven.   It wasn't until the late 1970's that side-by side refrigerator models reached residential homes.  French Door refrigerators joined the line of Kitchen Appliances by the early 2000s.   Today, there are so many options to choose from for complete kitchen packages.  Ovens and ranges can be purchased separately or as one slide in unit, along with a cooktop in electric with smooth top induction cooking, regular coil top or natural gas.

Although the microwave oven was available in the late 60's, the popularity for the residential model didn't really happen until the late 1970's into the early 1980s.  They were big, heavy and pretty expensive.  Now, there are smaller countertop models, as well as the over the range model to match the rest of the cooking pieces.

Dishwashers became popular during the 1970s, consequently rounding out the entire kitchen package.  Today, there are very few homes without an electric dishwasher.

Innovations are continuing at an extremely quick pace.   Dishwashers are practically silent, microwave ovens now have convection cooking methods available and some refrigerators are now coming with Wi-Fi, and will soon be able to call in their own part order – before you know there's a problem.

There is a large host of manufacturers for kitchen appliances like Amana and GE (two of the original) as well as Whirlpool, KitchenAid, LG, Samsung and more.
