MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A form of therapy that was big in the 60's and 70's is making a comeback and it's meant to treat an array of ailments.

It's called flotation therapy and floaters swear by it.

Those who go in for treatment use it for pain, migraines, meditations and simply for relaxing.

First you shower then you step into a tank, put in ear plugs and float.

The secret is to close the door and float in the water which contains about1200 pounds of Epsom salt.

This makes it magnesium sulfate which helps relax the nerves and muscles while also helping those who are magnesium deficient. Some of the benefits may have to do with the absorption of those minerals.

Next is sensory deprivation in the form of no light or sound. That allows the mind to enter a deep state of relaxation and gravity reduction by 80 percent and allows the muscles and joints to take time off.

Studies show it can improve circulation, performance and focus.

As for those who can't sleep, floater Andy Hnilo said "magnesium is incredible for sleeping. I would go home and be so relaxed."

"There's no amount of antidepressants or pain medication that can replace this," said floater Christy Gardner.

Meantime, some say they couldn't stay still or quiet for an hour and a half.

For those interested, tt costs less than $50 for 90 minutes and many floaters said it's given them relief they haven't experienced before.

There are a few clinics in South Florida if you think this type of therapy floats your boat.
