FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A Ft. Lauderdale firefighter, taken to the hospital as a precaution after he was escorted out of a burning building, has been released.

Deputy fire chief Timothy Heiser said the lieutenant has since been released from the hospital and is recuperating at home. He will be reevaluated before returning to work.

Firefighters were called to a vacant duplex at 2421 NW 23rd Lane around 2:45 a.m. When they arrived they noticed smoke and flames shooting out of the roof, windows and doors.

Neighbors said the duplex has been abandoned for years.

As crews attacked the flames from inside the units, one of the firefighters became distressed.

"They were inside the structure and they realized that there was an issue so they assisted getting him out of the structure. We got him to one of our ALS paramedic units, began to treat him and took him down to Broward Health," said Heiser.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
