Lawmaker Renews Push To Bring Mega Casinos To Florida

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) —A state lawmaker is taking a big gamble on a new bill that would bring two resort casinos to South Florida.

Rep. Dana Young, a Tampa Republican, released on Monday a mammoth bill that would upend the state's multi-billion dollar gambling industry.

The legislation does not address the compact that allows the Seminole Tribe of Florida to offer blackjack and other games at its casinos. A key portion of that compact expires later this year.

Young's bill would allow two casinos in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Voters in those counties would have to approve the casinos ahead of time.

The measure (HB 1233) would also allow slot machines to be added to dog tracks in both Palm Beach and Lee counties.

Past efforts to approve mega casinos have failed in the Legislature.
