The article states the 88-year-old Castro met with the group on Saturday but the article, written by Castro, appeared in the paper on Monday. "The five anti-terrorist heroes, who never did any damage to the United States, were trying to prevent and impede terrorist acts against our people that, it is well known, were organized by U.S. intelligence services," Castro wrote.

Three of the spies, Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, and Ramon Labañino, were released in December 2014 after serving 16 years in U.S. jails as part of the ongoing change in relations between the U.S. and Cuba which included a prisoner swap. Two others, Rene Gonzalez and Fernandez Gonzalez had previously returned after completing their sentences.

Castro's wife Dalia Soto Del Valle also appears in the photos.

Fidel Castro, who is only seen in photographs recently, hasn't been seen in public since January 8th, 2014.
