MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for a mentally ill Miami Gardens man who was shot and killed during an alleged confrontation with police.

Dozens of family members and friends of Lavall Hall gathered at Sierra Norwood Baptist Church in Miami Gardens.

According to the family, the 25-year-old suffered from schizophrenia.

Hall's mother, Catherine Daniel, called police for help after he was having what called "an episode" earlier this month.

They said they had called police in the past, and this time hoped authorities would come take him to the hospital.

When Miami Gardens Police showed up, Hall reportedly had a broom in his hand. Police said there was an altercation and they were forced to open fire.

The shooting is still under investigation.

Hall's family, who has been demanding answers, has asked for an outside agency to review the case.
