One Dead In Early Morning Turnpike Accident

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – One person is dead following an early morning accident on the turnpike.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened when a driver, who was trying to pass a car, hit that car and lost control around 3:30 a.m. Friday.

The driver was traveling southbound on the turnpike, near 112th Avenue when it struck the car it was trying to pass. The car, which was struck, lost control and traveled across the median. The driver suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.

The car which caused the accident ended up on the grass and caught fire. The driver sustained severe burns and was transported to Homestead Hospital by Miami Dade Fire Rescue. FHP said he died at the hospital.

All northbound and southbound lanes were closed at the time of the accident, both were reopened by 8 a.m.
