Local Man Steps In To Help MADD

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- For years Robert Pozo has been organizing running events across the country including founding the ING Miami Marathon but soon his latest venture is one that is close to his heart.

"Now it gives a different purpose. You don't see it as work. You see it as one of the many people that is suffering and remembering and it is still very fresh in our minds,"  said Robert Pozo.

Seven months ago Pozo's mother 81-year old Maria Pozo and her husband were heading home from her retirement party when tragedy struck.

"While my dad was  little banged up and had a broken rib, my mom didn't make it.  They  were victims' of an alleged drunk driver"  said Pozo.

Pozo's daughter was also devastated by the loss of her good friend Kaely Camacho  who was killed in a DUI crash.  Sandor Guillen was charged with DUI manslaughter and is facing 20 years for her death.

"When you have been touched enough times to when you say there's an opportunity let me do something about it"  said Pozo.

Something is being done.  Pozo's company is joining Mothers Against Drunk Driving in helping them with this year's Walk Like MADD event for Pozo it is a way of giving back to an organization that was there for them when they needed it most.

"It's about raising awareness for what MADD does and what they stand for.  I thinks it's great for my dad and myself.  They reached out to us from the very beginning,"  said Pozo.

Walk Like MADD event is aimed at raising awareness about the drunk driving.  It will be held Sunday, February 8th from 7:30 a.m to noon at Tropical Park.
