MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) -- Friends and family gathered to commemorate a Miami Gardens man who was shot to death in front of his girlfriend's children.

A candlelight vigil  and memorial service for James Hall, 40, started at 6:00 p.m. in Overtown at 15th Street and 1st Avenue. Those attended wore shirts that read "I am James Hall."

Hall's girlfriend, who was consoled by friends and family at the vigil, said she's hopeful police will solve the case.

"They have good leads and they're in a good working place right now, so I'm not disappointed, but they're working hard and it's going to be a good outcome," she said.

Witnesses said Hall had just pulled into the driveway of his home at NW 175th Terrace and NW 17th Avenue when he was shot.

His girlfriend, Ashley Walden, said he had just returned from picking up the her children, one 14-years old – the other 12, from their grandmother's when he was gunned down.

The 14-year old boy said four men surrounded the car while he and his brother were inside. That's when he said, a man shot the windshield with a shot gun causing it to shatter.

The man then looked inside, saw the 12-year old in the front seat and took off, according to the 14-year old.

Hall's family said they don't know who or why someone would want to do something like this.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
