TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) – A construction firm official and attorney has been chosen for a spot on the State Board of Education by Gov. Rick Scott.

Scott on Friday announced he was appointing Michael Olenick to the seven-member board that sets education policy and picks the education commissioner.

Olenick, 62, is the former general counsel for the Department of Education. He currently works as vice president of corporate affairs and chief compliance officer for The Morganti Group.

The international firm does contracting and construction management work and has worked for schools and colleges in Florida. The state board annually asks for construction money from the Florida Legislature.

Olenick maintains that his appointment would not be a conflict since he would be setting policy. He noted that he does not solicit construction business directly from schools.
