Gov. Scott Wants To Increase STEM Spending

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - When he unveils a budget proposal in the coming weeks, Governor Rick Scott will seek to bolster what has become known in the education world as "STEM" --- science, technology, engineering and math.
Scott's office said Wednesday the budget proposal will include $1 million to create a paid summer residency program for STEM teachers to work with high-tech companies. The announcement said 16 companies have agreed to take part, including Florida Power & Light, Gulf Power and Northrop Grumman.
The budget proposal also is expected to include $30 million for a new workforce-training effort focused on STEM jobs and $5 million in incentive funding to help spur state colleges to offer $10,000 STEM degrees, according to the governor's office.
Scott's budget proposal will be considered by lawmakers this spring as they draw up a final spending plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1st.
