MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A former Miami Dolphins player swam to safety after falling off a moving boat miles off shore.

U.S. Coast Guard officials said former Miami Dolphins fullback Rob Konrad was fishing off the South Florida coast when he fell off.

Officials said they started searching for him after a friend of Konrad's called Wednesday night saying he was overdue from his fishing trip.

They did not find him during the first search by air so they decided to try to launch again.

Coast Guard officials said right before they were about to launch around 4:40 a.m., Palm Beach Police called saying they had Konrad and they were taking him to the hospital.

Konrad told authorities, he had swam nine miles to the Palm Beach shore and got there at around  4:30 a.m.

He was released from the Good Samaritan Hospital on Friday morning.

The boat was last seen headed towards the Bahamas, according to Coast Guard officials.
