Scott Budget Could Trim AHCA Jobs

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - Gov. Rick Scott could be dialing back the number of positions at the state Agency for Health Care Administration as part of his proposed 2015-16 budget.

Justin Senior, an AHCA deputy secretary who directs the Medicaid program, touched on the potential job cuts Wednesday as he discussed the managed-care system with the Senate Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee.

Under the managed-care system, which was put in place across the state last year, HMOs and other types of health plans are responsible for dealing directly with medical providers and Medicaid beneficiaries. That has shifted responsibilities away from AHCA.

Senior said after Wednesday's meeting that the agency closed some area offices last year but held the jobs vacant.

At least in part, he said he expects those positions to be included in proposed reductions. Scott will issue a budget proposal that lawmakers will consider as they craft a final spending plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1.
