TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - A South Florida senator has proposed creating an online voter-registration system in time for the 2016 elections.

The bill, filed by Sen. Jeff Clemens, D-Lake Worth, calls for the state Division of Elections to establish a secure website that would accept voter-registration applications starting Jan. 1, 2016.

Under the bill, applicants would submit driver's license numbers or Florida identification numbers that would be compared with information maintained by the state Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. That would be aimed at confirming the names and dates of births of potential voters.

If the information is confirmed, it would be sent, along with applicants' digital signatures, to local supervisors of elections.
