Man Arrested After Deerfield Beach Stand-Off

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - An armed man wanted for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend was taken into custody after a lengthy stand-off with Broward Sheriff's deputies.

It began Monday, around 1:30 p.m., when 35-year old Michael Kemp got into a fight with his girlfriend.

"The suspect had a gun and was pointing it at his girlfriend. She was able to call for help. Our units arrived very quickly. Once we did arrive on seen the suspect fled," said sheriff's spokeswoman Gina Carter.

Kemp broke into a home about a block away at Martin Luther King Avenue and 2nd Street in Deerfield Beach and forced the three people inside out, according to the sheriff's office.

Neighbors were forced to evacuate for safety reason as deputies put the area on lock down and tried to talk Kemp into giving up. More than seven hours after the stand-off began deputies finally located Kemp inside the home.

Investigators said a K9 sniffed him out in a tiny crawl space were he was hiding

"He was hiding there for a while. We were able to track him down, we were able to get him out, he does have a slight injury from the K9 which was able to track him into the space," said Carter.

Kemp is facing a number of charges including aggravated domestic violence, aggravated assault and armed burglary.
