PEMBROKE PINES (CBSMiami/AP) — A South Florida family got their dog back for Christmas after a veterinarian performed life changing surgery on the 4-year old dachshund.

Lola had a slipped disc that prevented her from walking. Owners Sumey and David Hageman gave her to an animal rescue group because they couldn't afford the $6,000 surgery. But veterinarian Michael Wong of Kendall heard about their plight and did the surgery.

On Christmas Eve, the Lola was reunited with her Pembroke Pines family.

Wong told CBS4 newspartner the Miami Herald he cooked up the surprise after seeing how heartbroken the Hegemans were to give up their dog. He often works with rescue groups and was doing Lola's surgery anyway. He decided to give them a special gift.

Sumey Hageman says it's the best gift she could have gotten.
