MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Miami police officer is recovering after a head-on collision with suspects who were speeding  away from the scene of a robbery Wednesday night.

The officer who was hit was responding to a robbery call at a Family Dollar Store.

Investigators said when the officer arrived, the masked gunmen were trying to make their getaway.

The suspects collided with the police cruiser in a neighborhood at the intersection of NW 13th Avenue and 53rd Street.

Witnesses on scene say they saw someone jump out of the suspect's car and take off on foot.

Neighbors were blocked from getting to their homes and others who needed police help were put on stand-by while a large amount of police resources were being used to catch the suspects.

After about three hours of searching, police had two people in custody.

Investigators say one of them was taken to the hospital to be treated because he was bitten by the police dog. Officers are still searching for a third person.

Miami P.D. officials say the officer involved in the crash had minor injuries. He went to the hospital to have shards of glass removed from his arm.
