MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The families of South Floridians killed by drunk drivers are raising awareness against drunk and drugged driving this holiday season.

"A drunk driver hit us and literally drove through our car," said Bree Ann Camacho.

Camacho said she will never forget the April morning in 2012 that a drunk driver smashed her family's minivan in half. The drunk driver was travelling over 100 mph in the South Dade bus lane when they crashed, claiming the life of Camacho's 13-year old sister Kaely Ann.

"Please, please designate a non-drinking driver during the holidays so you don't have to go through what we're going through," said the girls' mother Angie Camacho.

Simulations and demonstrations were held outside the Ryder Trauma Center on Tuesday. Doctors partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving and police to raise awareness in the hopes of preventing more tragedies.

"Don't get behind the wheel after a few drinks. Just because the limit is legal doesn't mean the limit is safe," said Dr. Nicholas Namias at Ryder Trauma Center.

"After drunk driving crashes, there is no happy holiday.  It just can't happen. The pain is very real.   I'm here on behalf of Annie Ashe, Eyder Ayala and also for my daughter Helen Marie," said Helen Witty with MADD.

A study says three in every 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point in their lives.

MADD is asking for drivers to put red ribbons on their cars Christmas Eve and keep them there through the New Year to remind other drivers to use a designated driver when drinking.
