FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Several Boca Raton firefighters showed the true spirit of the holiday season when they came to the aid of an injured colleague.

In the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day, Captain Mike McBrien was seriously hurt after he passed out in the fire station and a fire truck ran over his leg. He was rushed to the Delray Medical Center.

McBrien said at the time he thought the accident may have been a game changer for him and his family.

"While it was on my leg I kept thinking 'Get it off, get it off' and I thought the damage was already done. There are responsibilities and things that you have to take care of and the recurring thought I kept having was that I'll never be able to use my legs again," said McBrien.

When those at the firehouse heard that McBrien's children were disappointed that he couldn't be with them to help put up the Christmas decorations over the weekend, a yearly tradition for the family, they decided to pitch in.

Monday morning two dozen firefighters and police officers showed up at McBrien's home and put up the decorations. Some people even stopped by with donated decorations and lights. In a matter of hours, they had exterior of the home looking festive and ready for the holidays.

Doctors were able to save McBrien's leg and he should be released in the hospital in the next few days.
