HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) – Broward prosecutors have dropped murder charges against a man accused of killing a Canadian tourist.

Twane Dobard, 38, was accused of robbing and stabbing to death Canadian tourist Domenico Perruccio, 58.

Perruccio was found bleeding on the sidewalk near Federal Highway in the early morning hours of January 26th.

Based on witness accounts, including a woman who had been with Perruccio, police arrested Dobard.

But science has proven them wrong.

"Thank God for DNA," said Donnell Brown, Dobard's uncle. "Because I've seen a whole lot of people go to prison because of he said, she said."

Dobard's attorney confirms that DNA tests on the murder weapon eliminated him as a suspect.

His family's said their prayers have been answered.

"When I heard that I looked at the sky and said 'hallelujah!'" his aunt Constance Jones told CBS4's Joan Murray.

"We all knew Twane had a drug problem, but he never had the anger to kill anyone," said Brown.

Dobard's family is expecting him home in several weeks after he finishes a prison sentence for violating probation.

Now police are back at the drawing board, trying to make a DNA match to find the real killer.

Residents in Hollywood want to know why the woman – who saw the stabbing – steered police to Dobard.

"Maybe she's trying to protect someone," said neighbor Guy Rossi.

Now that Dobard's family has found peace, they want the same for Perruccio's family.

"I pray they find the murderer that killed that man. I pray for justice for them like our family," said Jones.
