Teens Injured In Shooting At Carol City High

MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) – A 16-year-old Miami Gardens youngster who was shot Thursday afternoon in a dispute at Miami Carol City High School remains in critical condition.

CBS4 has learned a 17-year-old friend who was with him and who was also shot has been released from Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Both victims had been airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center right after the shooting that happened just before 4 p.m. at the school at N.W. 183rd St. and N.W. 33rd Ave. in Miami Gardens.
Investigators believe the two injured teens were involved in a fight with two other people when the shots rang out.
The two uninjured people took off on foot after the shooting, police were able to detain one and questioned him about his involvement. He has since been released.
Friends identified one of the victims as Khambrel Mannings, 16, a student at American High School. CBS4's Peter D'Oench discovered that Mannings lives in an apartment complex across the street from the school. Friends identify the 17-year-old victim as "Trenard."
"I just think it's crazy," said student Rachel Pichardo, "You can't even be safe in your own school."
"It hit close to home because I know him and it can happen to anybody," said student Patrice Kendrick. "It's just not safe, not a safe environment any more."
"I feel uneven being here," said student Tyree Witherspoon.
Students who were on the Carol City High campus when the shooting happened said they heard about a dozen gunshots and kids ran into the gym as the school was placed on lock down.
"I saw a lot of people running and I heard gunshots. When I heard gunshots I got up as quick as I could because I didn't want to get caught up in that," said Kera Battle.
Kenneth Hayes, another student, said, "I was playing basketball and I heard gunshots and that's when I ran outside to see what happened. Everybody was scared."
Police are still trying to locate the two people who ran away from the shooting to try to determine who started the fight and who shot who.
