FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) — The man accused of stealing a bunch of knives from a restaurant, then making four stops and terrorizing 10 people along the way, made his first appearance in court Tuesday.

Allan McDonald is charged in connection to the rampage that took place Saturday morning.

The victims said McDonald had a lot of knives on him, including one big one.

"It was a long knife, it was about 15 inch. It looked like a machete," said victim Carlos Delgado.

In one case, he's accused of grabbing a knife from a stranger's kitchen.  But no one is quite sure why he went on the rampage in the first place.

"I said what are you doing here, who are you?" recalled a victim.  "He said 'never mind.'"

Carter McDonald told CBS4's Ted Scouten that his brother, who he affectionately calls Alby, has had some turmoil in his life.

He said his brother has had a tough go of it with undiagnosed psychiatric problems, trouble dealing with his mother's murder and finally losing his home to foreclosure.

"I believe that Allan was pushed to the brink of insanity," said Carter McDonald.  "When he was forced into foreclosure and put on the streets, he simply lost it. "

The night of the incident, police and victims wondered if McDonald was on drugs. But his brother said that isn't the case.

"While half the folks in town are running around on pharmaceuticals," said Carter, "this guy won't even take a two year old expired aspirin.  He won't even take an anti-histamine when he has a cold. There's simply no pill you can throw at this guy."

He said this is a case of a man pushed too far.

"This was all foreshadowed," said Carter McDonald. "They all knew in advance that this was going to happen if they took Alby out of his home and forced him out on the street."

McDonald is being held in the Broward County Jail with no bond.
