MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Saturday morning meant the start of new tolls on the Dolphin (SR836) and  Airport (SR112) Expressways.

The new toll rate on SR836 will be $0.70 on the expressway and $0.30 on ramps that have a toll plaza.

The rate on SR 112 will be $0.35.

The new tolls and price hikes are meant to help fund improvements.

"Some will pay more, some will pay what they've never paid before and some will pay less than what they currently pay. By having people pay for the portion they use, we are now able to move forward to make critical improvements to the expressway," said Mario Diaz with the Miami‑Dade Expressway Authority.

Those improvements include additional lanes, as well a new flyover for the always backed up I-95 exit.

With 17 new tolls on the Dolphin expressway, drivers won't be able to drive on SR836 in any direction without paying.

Even those, driving less than a mile will be  charged 30 cents.

The drive from the Turnpike to Downtown Miami and  back currently is $2.50 but now it will cost $4.20.

It's estimated all those new tolls will raise nearly a billion dollars.

"If we don't do anything, with the increase in the population that we are expecting within the next 30 years, traffic will continue to get worse and worse and worse," said Diaz.
