MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A 10-year-old boy who was ambushed and shot in Little Haiti, along with his 17-year-old cousin, is home from the hospital.

"I'm ready to go to sleep. I'm good," said Ekari Godwin who got help from his siblings as he struggled to walk after being shot in the thigh. The third grader spoke with CBS4 News with his mother's consent.

"All of us was sitting right there. Then I ran," said Ekari.

There was no school Tuesday because of Veterans Day so Ekari and a group of kids were playing basketball outside his home off NW 58th St. and NW 5th St. around noon when bullets began flying.

"Two guys walked up with some guns and they start shooting and they start running," said Ekari's mother, LaTonya Fussell.

"I didn't even know I was shot," said Ekari.

He and his 17-year-old cousin were both shot as they tried to escape into a house.

His mother is angry to see what her son is going through.

"He's still in pain. He's still shocked. All the kids still shocked," said Fussell. "It makes me feel unsafe so I have to move ASAP."

For now, Ekari will have to miss school for a while and focus on healing from this frightening ordeal.

"I wanted to go to school today," he said.

Ekari's cousin is still in the hospital in stable condition. He was shot in the pelvis and had surgery. He's expected to remain in the hospital at least another week.

If you have any information on the shooting, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
