MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A man riding a bicycle is hit and killed after Homestead Police said the driver of the car fled the scene.

Homestead Police say a gray or silver SUV hit the man on the bike at the intersection of Krome Avenue and Mowry Drive.

Joe Edward Torres was hit and killed just before 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The driver left before police could arrive.

"If (the driver is) scared or if you guys were drunk or something, please, just turn yourself in," said Sylvia, a Torres family friend.

Torres' family knew him as "Joey," a kind and generous man who was raised by his grandmother and worked at a flower-packing company. His family says Torres was pedaling home when he was hit.

Surveillance video obtained shows someone getting out of car in the area where Torres laid injured, but it's unclear who that driver is.

At this moment, the Torres family's loss is amplified by knowing someone left Torres to die.

"Sooner or later, your conscious is going to hit you and you're not going to be able to live in peace because God knows who you are," said Sylvia. "We might not know who you are, but God knows who you are."

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami Crime stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
