HIALEAH (CBSMiami) -- A 2-year old boy is recovering in the hospital Friday evening after falling from a 4th floor balcony at a Hialeah building.

Police said the child walked through an open sliding glass door of an apartment building, located at 6975 West 16th Avenue, then fell from the fourth floor landing on the grass below which buffered his impact.

The child was conscious and alert with bruises and scratches but as of Friday evening doctors had not found any serious trauma to his body.

Daniela Torregrosa called 911 the second she heard the child had fallen. She also showed us some iPhone photos she took of paramedics caring for the child.

"He was right there, moving. The child didn't know what to do," said Torregrosa. ""I just saw the baby on the floor moving and crying."

The child's grandmother rushed down from the apartment.

"Then the grandmother came down to see this and she grabbed him," Torregrosa told CBS4's Peter D'Oench. "I could see scratches on his lips. It was scary and he was crying."

The child landed right next to Nayahliz Ruiz's apartment.

"I was scared. I got scared. I saw he had marks on his face and he was crying," said Ruiz.

Another neighbor, Xochilt Perez, said, "His face was swollen and he was bleeding from the mouth. This was horrible. I feel really bad for the baby."

The child was later airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Hialeah Police said the child's mother was in the apartment with the child at the time it happened but they do not suspect foul play or crime.

"It appears to have been an accident. There were no signs of negligence," said Detective Carl Zogby of Hialeah Police.

The child's mother was distracted before he got out to the balcony.

"She said she was doing the dishes. If you are doing the dishes, keep your eye on the kids," said Torregrossa. "I told the Mom to keep your eye on the kids, these things won't happen."

Police said the child's aunt and grandmother were also watching the boy.

"I'm hearing one of the ladies, the grandmother went out on the balcony to do something and in a second before she knew it, he slithered through. He was small and fast. She said, 'I opened the door and close it and said it happened real fast and I couldn't find him,'" said Zogby. "This is going to end well but this could have been a tragedy...This can happen to the best of people. It can happen in seconds. You can not take your eye off children. They are quick. In seconds, they can get away from you."

Family members at the apartment building did not want to say anything.

As of Friday evening, the boy was listed as a "no information" patient which means his family does not want information released. Hialeah Police said doctors are running tests
