Catholic Church Changes Stance On Gays

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A host of topics are being discussed at a two week meeting at the Vatican and valuing gay people was one major talking point.

"Throughout parochial school and high school I always thought I'd join the seminary," said Ivan Cano.

Cano even had a scholarship to the seminary, but when he realized he was gay he didn't follow through with his calling.

He's now the head of Miami Beach Gay Pride and took a look at a report that's out a week into the Vatican's synod.

The report said gay Catholics should be valued and they have "gifts and qualities" to offer parishes.

CBS4's Cynthia Demos went to Archdiocese of Miami and spoke with Monsignor Chanel Jeanty about the report.

"The human person is valued and should be valued," said Jeanty.

The report also said while there are moral problems with homosexual unions there are times when "mutual aid to the point of sacrifice constitutes a precious support in the life of the partners."

"Those in partnerships and living together how they support each other," said Jeanty.

As for Cano, he is glad the Catholic Church has made change.

"I thank God for sending the Holy Spirit and giving them a little wisdom to have this dialogue at this time," said Cano. "We give out of our heart and our love whether you're gay, a man or a woman."

However, the Archdiocese said the church has always taken this stance. It's just being brought up at the Vatican gathering to clarify the thoughts and make sure everyone's on the same page.

"It's a new emphasis on the quality of the personal approach to the gay community," said Jeanty.

Conservatives strongly disagree with this new emphasis, but for Cano who still goes to church said it's a step in the right direction.

"I lost faith in the administration a long time ago, but I still hold the values dear to my heart," said Cano.
