'I Am So Hurt' Says Mother Of Hit & Run Victim

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A teenager about to be taken off life support was mourned at a vigil in Northwest Miami-Dade.

Friday night, about 50 family members and friends gathered at the 2300 block of NW 103rd Street. It's the same location where 17-year-old Juan Fernandez was hit by an SUV Wednesday night. Miami-Dade police say the driver of the SUV that hit Fernandez fled.

A judge set bond at $300,000 for the man accused of hitting a teenager on a bike and leaving him to die.  Prosecutors described Alan Alvarez, 48, as "an absolute flight risk and danger to the community."

The crash left the young man with injuries so severe, his family made the heartbreaking decision to remove him from life support.

"I'm destroyed," said Juan Fernandez's mother, Lidia Fernandez, in Spanish.

"He's a nice guy. He's very obedient. He's always good at home. He don't get in trouble with nobody," said his sister Johanna Fernandez. "We're going through a hard time right now."

Fernandez's organs are being donated so that he can help others.

His family still can't understand how someone could do such a thing.

"My brother was no animal to be left ditched," said Juan Fernandez's sister, Maria Fernandez, in Spanish. "I still can't believe what has happened."

In court, prosecutors said Alvarez has been in trouble a number of times before

Prosecutor Laura Adams told the judge, "In addition to defendant's history of failing to appear in court,  his prior driving history of the three prior DUIs, I do also need to point out the defendant has two prior cases of possession of cocaine."

A Miami-Dade Police investigator told the judge in court that Alvarez was drinking at a bar before before getting behind the wheel of his blue Hyundai Wednesday night.

"He chose to go to a bar, drink to the point that he remembers leaving the bar being on the roadway and having blackouts through the whole incident," said the sergeant.

Police said Alvarez's mother and son helped him cover up the crime.

"He went home with his crashed vehicle and met his mother, drove to another location, left the vehicle where his son met him," said the police sergeant.

Surveillance video appears to show someone ditching the damaged SUV next to a car dealership up the street from where Fernandez was hit. A little bit later he's seen walking toward a motorcycle.

Bond for Alvarez was set at $300,000 plus house arrest. He was ordered not to drink or drive if he bonds out of jail. He is currently charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious injuries, but prosecutors said they expect to charge him with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide because Fernandez did not survive.

Family members said they are trying to raise money to bury Juan Fernandez in his home country of Honduras.

There is a vigil in his honor Friday night at the scene of the crash at 7:30 p.m.
