Taste Of The Town: Fork And Balls Offers New Twist On A Classic

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - It's all about the "balls" at the new Fork and Balls restaurant on Las Olas Boulevard in Ft. Lauderdale.

Owner Tim Petrillo and his business partner Peter Boulukos have created a one of a kind meatball driven menu that rocks an old time comfort food.

"Back in the day it was spaghetti and meatballs, or a meatball sandwich, now you have meatballs everywhere. It's kind of like the next trend, I think, like a burger a long time ago," Petrillo.

Chef Bill Breuning said his meatballs are made with love. You name the meatball you want, they'll roll it out.

"We have lamb, pork, veal, we also have chicken, vegetarian balls and gluten-free balls. We've got them all," said Breuning.

Fork and Balls has a trendy, upscale, New York vibe and is one of the first Broward restaurants to offer 20 wines on tap, as well as a full bar.

As for meatballs, they won't weigh heavy on your wallet.

"That was the goal," said Petrillo, "Las Olas Boulevard is not known for being cheap place to go. We wanted to bring something that was a little more affordable."

During her visit, Boulukos started Lisa Petrillo off with The Toscana, a blend of meats served with butter beans, parmesan cheese and broccoli rabe.

"It's like as Barbara would say "Buttah," Petrillo said after giving it a taste. "You don't need teeth. It's so unbelievably moist and smooth. That's the best meatball I've ever had."

The Greek Meatball Sandwich makes you say "Opa"!

"I'm transported to the Greek Islands! That is an authentic lamb meatball," said Petrillo.

And the "balls" aren't the only thing on the menu. Petrillo found the brussel sprouts were "to die for."

"These brussel sprouts are a meal in itself. They are crunchy yet soft on the inside," she said.
