Thousands Of Bikers Expected For Key West Poker Run

KEY WEST (CBSMiami/FKNB) – Thousands of motorcyclists from throughout America are traveling the Florida Keys Overseas Highway from mainland Florida to Key West this weekend.

They will raise money for charity during the 42nd Peterson's Key West Poker Run.

Traditionally, the event attracts some 10,000 bikers who traverse the 113-mile roadway through the Keys, which features 42 bridges over the water.

Participants receive poker sheets when they register to ride, and draw cards at designated stops along the route through the Keys. Entrants who draw the 10 best poker hands are eligible to play in a winner-take-all round of Texas Hold 'Em late Saturday night, competing for a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle or $6,000 cash.

A section of lower Duval Street, Key West's main thoroughfare, is closed to car traffic so bikers can park on the street to display their bikes.

Other weekend attractions include a bike merchandise market, "Biker Bash" and street party, custom bike show, blessing of the bikes and events at Key West resorts and watering holes.

The event, that concludes Sunday, raises money for the Diabetes Research Institute and Key West-based charities.
