Fla. Diver Begins Quest To Reclaim World Record For Longest Saltwater Dive
LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA (CBSMiami) – South Florida scuba diver Allen "The Grouper" Sherrod is attempting to reclaim his world record for the longest scuba dive in saltwater.
Early Thursday morning, Sherrod entered the water at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea to begin his quest for a continuous 55-hour dive.
Sherrod originally broke the world record for longest saltwater dive in 2011 when he spent 48 hours and 13 minutes underwater.
But in 2013, British diver Sean McGahern broke Sherrod's record when he spent 49 hours and 56 minutes at the bottom of the Mediterranean off the coast of Malta.
Now, Sherrod wants to reclaim his world record but that's not all. He's also going to get hitched in an undersea wedding.
On Friday morning, The Grouper and his fiancée Barbara Wynns will get married in an underwater ceremony attended by a wedding party of mermaids.
Allen and Barbara will exchange vows using SCULS (Self Contained Underwater Loud Speaker) units.
On Sunday September 20th, Sherrod is scheduled to emerge from sea at noon.

A popular spot for beach divers because of its near-shore coral reefs, the Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea was declared the "Shore Dive Capital of South Florida" by the Broward County Commission in September 1997.
