TSA Opens "Pre-Check" Application Office At MIA

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The next time you fly out of Miami International Airport you may not have to take off your shoes and belt.

That is if you sign up to be on the Transportation Security Administration Pre-Check (TSA Pre✓™) list.

On Wednesday airport and TSA officials announced the opening of a TSA Pre✓™ application site at MIA.

The Pre-Check is an expedited screening program that allows travelers to leave their shoes, light outerwear and belt on during the terminal screening process. Those approved will also be allowed to keep their laptop and federally compliant liquids/gels in their carry-on suitcase without having to remove them at the checkpoint.

To get on the TSA Pre✓™ list, U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents should first go to TSA.gov and start the pre-enrollment process. Once completed, they can then go to the application center where they will provide valid required identity and/or citizenship/immigration documentation along with fingerprints.

It costs $85 for a five-year membership.

"TSA Pre✓™ is enabling us to move away from a one-size-fits-all approach to transportation security," said TSA's Miami Federal Security Director John Daly.

"We are happy to partner with the TSA to provide travelers an opportunity to sign up for this program and thereby benefit from an expedited security process," said Miami-Dade Aviation Department Director Emilio T. Gonzalez.

Once approved, travelers will receive a Known Traveler Number and will have the opportunity to utilize TSA Pre✓™ lanes at security checkpoints at 119 participating airports and on 11 major airlines.

The TSA Pre✓™ application center at MIA will operate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located on the 4th level of North Terminal D, across from the Lost and Found. It is highly recommended that applicants visit tsa.gov to pre-enroll and establish an appointment. Walk-ins will be taken on a first come, first served-basis after those with appointments are processed.
