Injured Road Ranger's Family Begs Community To Drive Safely

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The family of a road ranger hit by an alleged drunk driver while helping a motorist is asking the community to drive safely.

Erika Da Costa and her family started praying early Sunday morning for her father-in-law, 60-year-old Amaury Da Costa's recovery. They've been praying ever since.

Da Costa is a road ranger whose job is to assist accident victims and any driver in need of help on the road.  It was while he was doing his job helping someone along Interstate 95 that he was struck.

Troopers said 19-year-old Shelton Joseph was behind the wheel of the car and had been drinking.  He has been charged with driving under the influence.

Da Costa has been in the hospital since the crash.

"We attempted to talk to him and he doesn't remember anything so we are hopeful he will get better and get back to being who he is and what he used to be, my dad," said Ingrid Da Costa.

Da Costa's father just walked her down the aisle a couple of weeks ago and she returned to town from her honey moon to learn of the accident that injured her father.

"It makes me feel sad this was a young man who ruined his life and it's between him and God. It's not up to me to judge," said Da Costa.
