Friday Night Football: Coral Gables Vs. Columbus

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Two top South Florida high school football teams face off  Friday night at Tropical Park.

Coral Gables High School (2-0) will look to continue their streak against Columbus (2-0). Kickoff is 7:30.

When the schools battled each other on the gridiron last year, Coral Gables won both matches in dramatic comebacks.

Columbus still feels the sting from last season's losses, and made it clear on their athletics Facebook page this game is important.

"Ladies & Gents... this Friday is possibly the MOST IMPORTANT game of the season for the Explorers, as we fight to take back the District 14-8A title. We need a BIG CROWD for Friday's game so make sure you make it out to Tropical Park at 7:30 pm to catch it," read the post.

For the Columbus hopefuls, CBS4's own sports reporter Kim Bokamper said he thinks Columbus will beat Coral Gables.

CBS4 News partner the Miami Herald had Andre C. Fernandez, a sports writer for the paper, chimed in with his winning pick. Fernandez thinks Columbus will need supporters in the stands, because he has Coral Gables winning, 24-23.

"A stellar running game and stout defense might give Gables the edge once again in this matchup, which should come down to the wire just as it did twice a year ago," Fernandez wrote in his piece.

This game will set the tone for the remainder of the season for these two teams.
