Miami-Dade Organizations Team Up To Give Back To Residents

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - For fans of free things, Miami-Dade County organizations are teaming up to give back to the community.

Miami-Dade County Animal Services, Miami-Dade Water and Sewer, the Division of Environmental Resources Management and the Office of Sustainability have come together to offer free services for residents.

They will offer free trees, pet adoptions, water efficient showerheads, and energy-efficient light bulbs, plus the opportunity to dispose of old electronics.

The event will be held on Sunday, September 14th, from 9 a.m. to noon at Miami Dade College's North Campus located on 11380 NW 27th Avenue.

Residents who would like to adopt a pet can go to the Animals Services' HOPE Express Mobile Pet Adoption trailer.

After they have connected with a cat or dog, the organization will include free spay/neuter, rabies vaccinations, deworming and micro-chipping.

For those in need of a tree, the Division of Environmental Resources Management's Adopt-A-Tree program will offer a wide range of options for residents. If eligible, attendees can walk away with any of these species of trees: mango, jackfruit, sugar apple, Indian tamarind, green buttonwood and pigeon plum.

The organization said they will have approximately 2,700 trees at the event, and experts will be on hand to show participants how to properly care for their new trees.

Miami-Dade Water and Sewer and the Office of Sustainability are providing energy-efficient light bulbs and high-efficiency showerheads to residents. In return, the departments are asking for residents to bring their old showerheads or their most heavily used light bulbs.

Those trying to get rid of  electronics can also bring them to the event. Someone will be on site to properly dispose of your old tech gear. They will accept faxes, computers, keyboards printers, telephones, calculators, TV's, VCR's and other obsolete electronics.
