Police: Man Shot After Officers Attempted To Disarm Him
WILTON MANORS (CBSMiami) – Police were forced to shoot a man in Wilton Manors Sunday, the police chief said.
Late Sunday night, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said the man who was shot died at Broward Health Medical Center.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said the incident began around 3 p.m. when two men notified law enforcement that their roommate at a home on NW 9 Terrace had a gun and was making threats to kill himself, kill them and kill any police officer who arrived to help.
When the suspect went outside, the men locked the doors, but told dispatchers he was trying to get back into the house. They could hear him firing shots outside, they told police.
When two Wilton Manors police officers arrived shortly after 3 p.m., they encountered the suspect who was still outside.
Police said he had a gun in his hand, and the officers told him repeatedly to put the gun down.
He refused, officers said.
Witnesses later told BSO homicide detectives that they heard the man saying "shoot me" more than once.
The officers fired, and the suspect was injured.
The two officers were put on paid administrative leave, which is the policy of the police department after a police-involved shooting.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office will continue the investigation for Wilton Manors.
