"He's fine. He's fine," said Pipkin's mother. "He's very upset about the situation. He can recall everything so he is aware that an officer did hit him."

BSO said the deputy did hit him while on his way home after working a night shift. Investigators said witnesses told them the deputy had the green light.

"Our deputy did try to avoid hitting this person," said Gina Carter of BSO. "He applied the brakes. They swerved their vehicle but unfortunately he did strike the pedestrian."

Pipkin's mom said her son is in the Intensive Care Unit but is expected to be okay.  He has a broken leg and cuts.

"There's only a right tibia that's fractured, other than that he has a laceration to the back of his head and the front of his face, otherwise he's got road rash," said his mother.

The sheriff's office reports the deputy was not injured.

Pipkin's mother said she learned of what happened from neighbors who saw the news that a guy on a skateboard was hit.  At first, they weren't sure if it was him.

"It's a very sickening feeling not knowing whether or not your son is the one that's been hit," said Pipkin's mother.
