Teen Accused Of Stabbing Mother Denied Bond

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A 19-year old who police say stabbed his own mother in their Gould's home made his first appearance before a judge on Tuesday.

U'Laun Jamar Volthire did not say much and appeared to have problems answering the judge's question as to whether he could afford an attorney.

In the end, the judge denied bond and ordered him to stay away from his mother.

According to the arrest affidavit, Yolanda Ferguson, 38, was sleeping in her bedroom when she was awoken by her son who was on top of her with a knife in his hand.

She began screaming—that's when the woman's daughter entered the room, investigators tell CBS4 News.

Volthire was screaming "mother must die" as he allegedly stabbed Ferguson in front of his two sisters, ages 15 and 8, and a 5-year-old brother, according to the police report.  Ferguson, according to the report,  was stabbed several times in the face, neck, and torso.

When one of his sisters yelled at him to stop, Volthire reportedly yelled back, "She's not going to die, stupid."

When she went for her phone to call for help, Volthire reportedly snatched it out of her hand, grabbed a purse and fled the residence. He was found covered with blood about 20 blocks away near the Southland Mall.

Volthire, who has a history of mental disturbance, was charged with attemped murder.

Robert Wilcher, Ferguson's brother, spoke about the teen's reported struggle with demons.

"We all have them and you don't feel the effect until it happens to you," said Wilcher. "We're just going to have to pray that everything goes well with U'Laun as well as his mom."

Wilcher believes the teen is a good kid.

"I don't know what he's struggling with but he's a good kid. If you asked me, 'would we see U'Laun doing this? No. He's a good kid."
