Police: Daughter Saves Mother From Knife Attack By Teen Brother

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A woman had to be airlifted to the hospital Monday after police say she was stabbed by her son.

U'Laun Jamar Volthire, 19, is accused of stabbing his mother, Yolanda Ferguson, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Volthire, according to police, entered his mother's bedroom while she was asleep.

According to the arrest affidavit, Ferguson, 38, was awoken by her son who was on top of her with a knife in his hand.

Ferguson, according to the report, told police that she was stabbed several times in the face, neck, and torso.

She began screaming—that's when the woman's daughter entered the room, investigators tell CBS4 News.

Volthire, according to CBS4's Gary Nelson, was screaming "mother must die" as he allegedly stabbed Ferguson and was in the presence of his two sisters, ages 15 and 8, and a 5-year-old brother.

The witness saw Volthire on top of Ferguson with a knife and yelled for him to stop. According to the report, the defendant yelled in response, "She's not going to die, stupid."

When the witness went to get the telephone to call police, Volthire reportedly took the phone from her hand, grabbed a purse and fled the residence.

The suspect was found covered with blood about 20 blocks away near the Southland Mall, according to Nelson.

Fire rescue responded and Ferguson was treated on scene and then transported to Kendall Trauma via air rescue.

A woman inside the home on SW 224 Terrace in Goulds declined to discuss the incident, as did a relative that was arriving at the home Monday.

Volthire was arrested, transported to jail and is being charged with attempted murder.

Police said the teen has a history of mental disturbance, according to Nelson.

Robert Wilcher, Ferguson's brother, spoke about the teen's reported struggle with demons.

"We all have them and you don't feel the effect until it happens to you," said Wilcher. "We're just going to have to pray that everything goes well with U'Laun as well as his mom."

Wilcher believes the teen is a good kid.

"I don't know what he's struggling with but he's a good kid. If you asked me, 'would we see U'Laun doing this? No. He's a good kid."
