Dog Found Shot And Bound With Duct Tape In Keys

KEY LARGO (CBSMiami) – Sheriff's detectives are investigating a case of alleged animal cruelty in Monroe County.

According to CBS4 news partner, The Miami Herald, a female pit bull terrier was found with a possible gunshot wound to the back of the head, stuffed in a plastic garbage bag with duct tape around her neck and snout.

Daniel Rossler found the dog along Gun Club Road in Key Largo, July 22, when he saw a plastic bag moving and stopped to investigate it, officials said.

The dog survived for just one day after she was found, but officials said she had to be put down because she began to bleed internally.

Rossler told KeysInfoNet that he removed the duct tape and the dog followed him around.

Animal care officials said a bullet damaged the dog's nasal passage.

The dog reportedly had also suffered other abuse, including having her canine teeth smashed out, and her ears were cut short.

Officials suspect the dog was part of a Miami-Dade dogfighting operation as either a breeder or a "bait dog" which is used for practice.
