Boxed Alternative To Bottled Water Hitting Store Shelves

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Bottled water is receiving a bad rap due to environmental concerns.

A company based in the Midwest is selling an alternative that claims to be more eco-friendly: water in a box.

"Being from a sustainable resource, made 76% from paper, it's actually better on the environment," said Brad Bevens with Boxed Water Is Better.

Boxed Water is Better is purified water packaged in Michigan and shipped cross-country. It costs 99 cents for a 16.9 ounce container that resembles a small milk carton.

In addition to using sustainably harvested trees to make the boxes, they also give 10-percent of their profits to environmental causes.

The company says the container is both recyclable and compostable, except for the plastic spout. Plans are in the works to start filtering and packaging the water in different locations around the country, to eliminate the need to ship it cross-country. Because the boxes are shipped flat they can fit 35-thousand on a single pallet.

While boxed water may have a smaller carbon footprint than bottled, environmentalists said the most eco-friendly water on-the-go is still tap water, especially when swigged from a reusable bottle.

Boxed or bottled, critics said re-useable water bottles are still your best option.

Unfortunately boxed water is difficult to find in South Florida, but a few specialty stores do sell them.
