Postal Inspectors Need Help In Mail Carrier Robbery
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - U.S. Postal inspectors went door to door and stuffed reward posters in mailboxes in a North Miami neighborhood Friday morning looking for help in finding the two men who assaulted and robbed a mail carrier.
The flyers were distributed in the area of 1015 NE 127th Street.
The master-key to the mailboxes at the North Miami apartment complex was wrestled away from the postal worker as she made her rounds before noon Thursday, according to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
"One of them kinda had her in a choke hold while the other one came around and stripped her of her keys," said postal service spokesman Ivan Ramirez.
Steve Lucsky said he rushed over when he heard the commotion. He saw two young men, likely in their late teens or early twenties, running away.
"It just so happens that you have a population of people who are trying to survive and instead of going out and being able to get a job, or whatever they don't have jobs so they are forced to steal," said "Ron". "Hopefully they are not violent and going to hurt anybody."
A spokesperson for the postal service said the letter carrier was shaken up, but not hurt.
In addition to the master key, the robbers also stole the key to her vehicle.
Until the locks on the boxes are changed, Lucsky and others are concerned about their mail and possible identity theft.
"I'm scared," said Titi Cole.
"One of our fears is definitely that it could escalate, it could become something more, something greater than what it is at the moment," said Ramirez. "We can't say for certain that this is related to anything we've dealt with in the past. Like I mentioned yesterday, schools out, we have a lot of teens out there just filling their time with foolishness, some times this could be a dare, it's happened. This could be prank, it could be a recruitment, we don't know for certain."
Anyone with information is urged to call 1-877-876-2455. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the arrest of the two men who robbed the carrier.
