Fire Rescue: Child Fell From Third-Floor Balcony

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue says a 4-year-old boy suffered a terrifying fall on Friday afternoon from the third floor of a Fort Lauderdale condominium.

A piece of green railing, which apparently broke free, lay on the ground at the Hidden Harbor Condominiums. Neighbors say the child was with his mother, who was unloading groceries when her child fell.

Patrick Pierson was inside his 3rd floor apartment next door when the child fell.

"I heard the mother scream," Pierson told CBS 4's Carey Codd. "I happened to come out and look and she was already down there with the child. She said somebody call 911, so I called 911. I can't believe this happened. I'm really shook up."

Pierson says the boy was crying, which was a good sign. He also says paramedics arrived within minutes. Fort Lauderdale Fire rescue says the child was conscious when they brought him to Broward General Medical Center.

Neighbor Mary Sturm says the boy and his parents have lived in the community for years and the child is known by everyone.

"They're wonderful people," she said. "Very good parents, wonderful little boy.

These neighbors are left praying that the child makes a complete recovery and that something like this never happens again.

"It's just a miracle," Pierson said. "They say he's going to be ok. I hope he is."

Pierson said he is a member of the board at the condominiums and that he has already reached out to workers to test and repair the railing.

As soon as we get an update on the child's condition we will update the story.
