Police: Man Accused Of Trying To Kill Bride Over Checkbook

HALLANDALE BEACH (CBSMiami) -- An elderly man is behind bars, accused of trying to his 73-year old bride over a checkbook, according to police.

Hallandale Police said the two have been married and living together for 8 months.

The 73-year old woman was sleeping in the bedroom of their Hallandale Beach apartment on July 7th when she was woken up by her husband, 79-year old Luis Ames who accused her of stealing his checkbook, according to the police report.

The woman denied the accusation which is when Ames allegedly went for a gun in the drawer of the bedroom dresser while shouting, "I'm going to kill you."

Ames then allegedly hit his wife on the head with the handle of the gun causing a laceration on her head.

His wife ran out of the home in fear for her safety but he husband followed her to the hallway and asked her "Where are you going?"

Ames' wife stopped to look back at him only to see him allegedly pointing the gun at her and shooting it.

Police said they found a small, bullet size hole on the ceiling in the area where the incident allegedly occurred.

His wife then continued to run away from him and was able to notify police about the alleged incident.

Witnesses said they saw Ames returning to his apartment where he was later taken into custody.

According to the police report, two witnesses gave statements which were consistent with the victim's  account of the incident.

Ames faces one charge of crimes against a person.
